Overview
Patients can sustain extensor and flexor tendon lacerations or ruptures from various etiologies.
This leads to dysfunction of the fingers and wrist contingent on which tendons are transacted. The patient may lose the ability to extend or flex the involved | digits and wrists.

Dr. Anup Patel has been trained in Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) pioneered by Dr. Don Lalonde in Canada to treat these injuries.
This provides immediate feedback in the operating room if the repair has worked and strong enough to bear the load. He is equipped to perform tendon transfers if the original tendon cannot be repaired primarily.

Patient 1
23 year old male top wakeboarder in the world presents with a rupture of the extensor tendon while on tour in Australia. Patient contacted Dr. Patel via telemedicine and booked for surgery. The patient undergoes WALANT with primary repair and returning to the wakeboarding tour in 3 months.
Patient 2
30 year old female who cuts her flexor tendon controlling DIP flexion with a knife when cutting avocado. (Avocado hand). The patient undergoes WALANT to have the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) repaired in the operating room. She is shown with almost full function at 4 weeks.
Patient 3
25 year old female who cuts her extensor tendon of her left thumb presents 6 weeks from injury from outside state. She undergoes tendon transfer under WALANT using a redundant tendon from her index finger to power her thumb extension. She had to return to her outside state where follow up pictures are not available.

Dr. Anup Patel
Dr. Anup Patel is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon trained in aesthetic, hand/upper extremity and reconstructive surgery. He completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery training at the premier Yale University followed by a hand and microsurgery fellowship at the New York University Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Mount Sinai Department of Orthopedics. Dr. Patel received his MD and MBA from the Yale University School of Medicine and Yale University School of Management, respectively. He graduated as the valedictorian of his class at the University of Florida majoring in economics, biochemistry and molecular genetics and valedictorian of his high-school class at Lake Highland.
