Overview
Skin cancer presents in various forms (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, etc.) that requires wide excision and complex reconstruction. We are adequately trained in both measures capable of removing your cancer and reconstructing in such a way to restore form and function.
Often, we collaborate with our dermatology colleagues in reconstructing complex skin cancer excisions. Specifically, dermatologists who perform Mohs excision will refer patients to our practice to have reconstruction after skin cancer excision.

Trained at Yale University by Dr. Stephan Ariyan, one of the pioneers in head and neck cancer reconstruction and the innovator of the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap, Dr. Patel has learned many ways to address your reconstructive needs from skin cancers including but not limited to skin grafts and flaps. This enables him to provide the patient both restoration of form and function.
Melanoma
Patient 1
43 year old, nurse female presents with melanoma of the right forearm referred by primary care physician for further management. Patient underwent 2 cm margins with reconstruction using rhomboid flap.
Patient 2
44 year old, lawyer female presents with melanoma of the left posterior leg. She saw three dermatologists before presenting to our office for definitive management. She underwent radical resection of the melanoma with double rhomboid, v-y advancement flaps for reconstruction of the defect. This enabled the patient to avoid a skin graft that would compromise the aesthetic and functional outcome in this area.
Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Patient 3
62 year old female had basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma of the nose with Mohs excision by a dermatologist. She underwent reconstruction using a bilobed flap to cover her sizeable defect.
Patient 4
71 year old, veteran presents with squamous cell carcinoma where the surgeon did not obtain clear margins. The patient presents as a third opinion for excision and reconstruction. The patient undergoes radical resection of the upper lip with immediate reconstruction. The patient has bilateral lip advancement flaps to provide both a satisfactory aesthetic and functional reconstruction.
Patient 5
70 year old, retired teacher female who underwent squamous cell carcinoma excision of the forehead developing wound healing issues leading to exposure of the skull. The patient was referred to our practice for treating this issue. We utilized shutter flaps to enable the tissue of the forehead to close the wound.
Patient 6
64 year old, retired lawyer male presents with invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp referred by the dermatologist. The patient undergoes radical resection of the cancer with immediate reconstruction using ying-yang flaps providing hair-bearing skin avoiding alopecia (balding).
Patient 7
61 year old, retired healthcare professional presents with basal cell carcinoma of the ear referred by the dermatologist. The patient undergoes tumor extirpation with immediate reconstruction using full-thickness graft from the post-auricle fold of the ear. This provided the aesthetic result reconstructing the ear skin.

Dr. Anup Patel
Dr. Anup Patel is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon trained in aesthetic, hand/upper extremity and reconstructive surgery. He completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery training at the premier Yale University followed by a hand and microsurgery fellowship at the New York University Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Mount Sinai Department of Orthopedics. Dr. Patel received his MD and MBA from the Yale University School of Medicine and Yale University School of Management, respectively. He graduated as the valedictorian of his class at the University of Florida majoring in economics, biochemistry and molecular genetics and valedictorian of his high-school class at Lake Highland.
